PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC, Hypromellose) is a non‑ionic cellulose ether refined from natural cotton linter via alkalization, etherification, washing and drying. It is a white or off‑white free‑flowing powder, soluble in cold water to form transparent, stable viscous colloid, insoluble in hot water and most organic solvents.

HPMC combines multiple core functions: water retention, thickening, bonding, anti‑sagging, film formation, dispersion and retarding. It is stable under weak acid and weak alkaline environments, non‑toxic, formaldehyde‑free and meets global export standards. As a core additive, it optimizes workability, stability and final performance in dry mortar, coatings, daily chemicals and many industrial sectors.

USAGE NOTES

Correct dissolving and adding method will avoid agglomeration and maximize the performance of HPMC:

  • Recommended method: Dry-mix HPMC with other powder raw materials evenly before adding water.
  • Dissolving: Cold water dissolving; hot water will not dissolve HPMC.
  • pH range: Stable between pH 5.0–7.5. Strong acid or strong alkali will reduce viscosity.
  • Addition dosage: Dry mortar 0.05%–0.3%; coatings & detergents 0.1%–0.5%.
  • Storage: Keep sealed, cool and dry. Avoid moisture absorption, which may cause caking.
  • Compatibility: Compatible with most water-soluble thickeners, dispersants and surfactants.

COMMON FORMULAS

Reference proportion for typical formulations (total weight basis):

Formulation Type HPMC Dosage Remarks
Interior Wall Putty 0.10% ~ 0.20% Medium viscosity grade, improve water retention
Tile Adhesive C1 0.15% ~ 0.25% High viscosity, anti-sagging
Self-leveling Mortar 0.06% ~ 0.12% Extra low / low viscosity, good fluidity
Water-based Latex Paint 0.20% ~ 0.40% Low viscosity, leveling & anti-settling
Liquid Detergent 0.15% ~ 0.30% Daily chemical grade, gentle thickening
Pesticide Suspension Agent 0.20% ~ 0.50% Stable suspension, reduce drift

These are reference ratios. Final dosage should be adjusted according to local raw materials and construction climate.

COMMON PROBLEMS IN DOWNSTREAM PRODUCTION

Problem Cause Analysis Solution
HPMC agglomerates & cannot dissolve Direct pouring into water without dry mixing Dry mix with powder first; use instant soluble grade
Mortar loses water quickly, cracks easily Viscosity too low or insufficient dosage Raise viscosity grade or increase addition amount
Mortar sags on vertical surface Viscosity insufficient, poor anti-sag property Switch to high / ultra-high viscosity HPMC
Paint viscosity drops after storage Microbial degradation, improper pH Add biocide; control pH within 5–7.5
Putty setting time too long Overdose of retarding type HPMC Reduce dosage or select standard type
Liquid product has poor transparency Poor purity, incomplete dispersion Switch to daily chemical grade, extend stirring time
