Product Introduction

Starch Ether is a modified starch derivative obtained through etherification reaction of natural plant starch. It is a water-soluble thickening and rheology control additive specially developed for dry-mix mortar industry.

Compared with cellulose ethers, starch ether provides excellent anti-sagging, slip resistance and opening time adjustment performance, with lower dosage and good cost performance. It can form reversible gel structure under shear force, which greatly improves construction performance of plaster, tile adhesive and putty.

This product appears as fine white or off-white powder. It has good compatibility with HPMC, redispersible polymer powder, retarders and other mortar additives. It keeps stable under alkaline cement system, and will not negatively affect cement hydration speed within normal addition range.

Starch ether is mainly used to optimize workability of building dry mortar. It helps workers get smoother spreading, reduces sliding of heavy tiles, and extends usable construction time on vertical surfaces. It is widely matched together with HPMC in modern dry-mix formulations.

POINTS FOR ATTENTION

Order Instructions

  • Confirm starch ether grade before ordering: SE300, SE600, SE800 or SE1000. Viscosity grade directly controls anti-slip and sagging resistance of your dry mortar.
  • Specify fineness requirement. Standard grade is 100 mesh; finer 120 mesh is available for putty formulas to reduce visible particles on finished wall surface.
  • Select packaging type: 25kg kraft paper bag, 25kg plastic drum or 1000kg jumbo bag. Pallet packing is recommended for sea shipment to avoid bag tearing and moisture absorption.
  • Inform us of your main formulation system: tile adhesive, gypsum plaster, wall putty or self-leveling mortar. Our technician can verify whether the selected grade matches your formula together with HPMC.
  • Minimum bulk order quantity is 1 ton. 25kg sample packages are supplied for lab test and pilot mixing trial before mass production.
  • Clarify document needs: TDS, MSDS, COA, Certificate of Origin. We provide complete documents for import customs clearance.
  • Stock grades can be shipped in 5–7 working days. Custom-modified starch ether with special substitution degree requires 12–20 working days production cycle.
  • Notify special storage or shipping requirements if your local climate is high humidity, we will add extra moisture-proof inner film for packages.

USAGE NOTES

  • Starch ether is designed for dry-mix mortar. It is mixed in dry state together with cement, calcium carbonate, quartz sand and HPMC before adding water at construction site.
  • Do not pre-dissolve starch ether alone in hot water. It will gelatinize rapidly and lose reversible anti-slip rheology property needed for tile adhesive.
  • Recommended dosage range: 0.02%–0.12% based on total dry powder weight. Overdose will cause sticky texture, slow drying and reduced final strength of mortar.
  • It works in alkaline cement and gypsum systems. Strong acid environment will break starch molecular chain and completely lose thickening and anti-slipping effect.
  • Mixing sequence in dry mortar production: mix starch ether evenly with HPMC and other additives first, then blend with cement and fillers, to prevent local high concentration agglomeration.
  • Starch ether is sensitive to high temperature and long-time ageing after hydration. Mortar mixed with water should be used within its open time; leftover slurry cannot be reused after coagulation.
  • Store sealed in cool and dry warehouse. Damp starch ether will cause uneven dispersion, unstable anti-slip performance and mold growth inside dry-mix bags.
  • When compounding with HPMC: starch ether mainly provides anti-sagging and tile slip resistance, while HPMC takes charge of water retention. Adjust two products separately to balance performance.

COMMON PROBLEMS IN DOWNSTREAM PRODUCTION

  • Tiles slide down on vertical wall: Selected starch ether viscosity grade too low, or dosage insufficient. Switch to SE1000 and increase dosage slightly, check HPMC water retention at the same time.
  • Mortar becomes too sticky and hard to trowel: Excessive starch ether addition. Reduce starch ether dosage and keep HPMC dosage unchanged.
  • Unstable anti-slip effect batch to batch: Uneven dry mixing in powder workshop. Starch ether proportion is very low; use pre-mixed additive masterbatch to improve dispersion uniformity.
  • Wall putty surface forms sticky film and slow drying: Overdosed starch ether. It will delay hydration and lead to long open time, easy contamination and low surface hardness after curing.
  • Performance drops after long storage of dry mortar bags: Starch ether absorbs moisture inside packaging. Check bag sealing quality and avoid stock in humid warehouse.
  • Gypsum plaster loses workability quickly: Starch ether matched with unsuitable retarder. Adjust retarder formula instead of blindly raising starch ether amount.
  • Fine particles visible on finished wall: Coarse mesh starch ether used for putty. Replace with 120 mesh fine grade starch ether.
  • Anti-slip effect disappears at high construction temperature: High temperature accelerates starch gelatinization. Increase starch ether dosage moderately or adjust construction open time system.
